Suspect wounded in police-involved shooting

Police shot a man who allegedly pointed a gun at officers during a foot chase early Saturday in the Southwest Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood, officials said.

The police-involved shooting happened about 2 a.m. in the 6700 block of South Artesian Avenue, according to statement from police News Affairs. Police initially listed the address as the 6700 block of South Campbell Avenue.

Officers were investigating robberies in the area when they saw three males and tried to approach them after announcing they were police officers, the statement said. One of the males fled on foot while officers were conducting a field interview.

The officers pursued the male on foot into an alley where he pointed a weapon at an officer, the statement said.

The officer then shot the male, who was taken into custody and hospitalized.

No officers were injured and a weapon was recovered on the scene.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden defended the shooting, claiming officers shot in fear of their lives after the 22-year-old man pointed a 9mm handgun at them as the chase went through the alley.

Police shot the man in the hip, and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Camden said, adding the injury is not thought to be life-threatening.

Area Central detectives and the police Independent Review Authority are investigating.
