A man was fatally shot in a gangway near his home late Thursday night in Humboldt Park, and a vehicle suspected in the shooting later hit a police car after a chase.

The 25-year-old man was standing in a gangway in the 3200 block of West Le Moyne Street about 11:40 p.m. when he was shot in the chest and neck, police said.

The man — identified as Efrain Cruz of the 3200 block of West Le Moyne — was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was pronounced dead at 12:17 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

About 12:25 a.m., police spotted a vehicle in the area of Division Street and California Avenue that matched the description of the vehicle involved in the shooting, police said.

Police pursued the vehicle, which struck a squad car at North Central Park and West North avenues, police said.

Two police officers were hospitalized with minor injuries and four people were taken into custody, police said. The vehicle was discovered to be stolen.

Area North detectives are investigating.
