Three arrested after shooting at police on North Side

Updated: September 11, 2012 6:14PM

Chicago Police arrested three alleged gang members after an exchange of gunfire early Tuesday in the North Side North Center neighborhood.

Officers exchanged gunfire with the suspects about 1:20 a.m. in the 2200 block of West Barry Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. No one was wounded and three men were taken into custody.

Ald. Scott Waguespack (23rd) said police stopped a vehicle containing three alleged gang members, at least one of whom opened fire on police.

The alderman said the three arrested men were part of the last members of gangs in the area.

“It’s actually a very safe neighborhood in how it’s changed over the years compared to how it used to be,” Waguespack said. “It’s because the neighbors have gotten more involved and are calling stuff in … They have worked to help us go after the problem.”

Area North detectives are investigating, but no charges had been filed as of Tuesday evening.

A spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police said he had no information on the incident.
