A 16-year-old boy is dead and a 17-year-old boy was critically wounded during a shooting in the South Side West Englewood neighborhood Thursday night.

The boys were shot in an alley in the 7500 block of South Paulina Street at 9:30 p.m. when someone got out of an approaching dark colored vehicle, opened fire and fled the scene, according to police said.

Jamauri Askew, 16, of the 1700 block of West 75th Place, was dead at the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The 17-year-old boy was shot in the torso and taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The shooting may have been gang-related, police said.

No one is in custody and Area South detectives are investigating.
