Would-be thieves carry ATM to truck, leave it behind

Thieves did the heavy lifting — literally — of taking an ATM from its foundation at a bank in the Bucktown neighborhood early Friday, but apparently something spooked them and they left the machine — and their getaway vehicle — behind.

Police responded about 4:27 a.m. to an alarm at a bank in the 2100 block of North Elston Avenue, News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said. There is a BMO Harris Bank branch at 2196 N. Elston Ave., according to a directory on the bank’s website.

When officers got to the scene they found the ATM on the east side of the bank had been pulled off the ground and removed from its concrete foundation, Mirabelli said.

They also found a rental truck with an attached trailer nearby that had apparently been stolen, he said. Its passenger-side window had been broken out, the engine had been left running without the keys and the ignition was pulled.

The ATM was just outside the truck’s trailer.

“They never got it onto the trailer,” Mirabelli said. The would-be thieves left both the ATM, and the trailer they brought to take it away in, behind.

No one was in custody as of late Friday morning as Area North detectives investigate.
