Bond was set at $10,000 Monday for a man charged with starting a brush fire with illegal fireworks Sunday afternoon that caused an estimated $150,000 damage.

Firefighters responded to the area of Buffalo Grove Road and Brandywyn Lane in northwest suburban Buffalo Grove about 1 p.m. and found a fire in an open field that was spreading towards nearby homes, according to the Buffalo Grove Police Department.

Nearby streets were closed for four hours as crews fought the two-alarm fire, a release from police said. Though no homes were burned, the fire came to within 15 feet of them, and nearby Commonwealth Edison power lines and equipment suffered damage estimated at $150,000.

An off-duty Morton Grove police officer saw four people running from the scene where illegal fireworks had been set off, according to the release. The officer identified them for local police, who took one in for questioning.

Gabriel R. Horwich, 20, of the 400 block of Cedar Court North in Buffalo Grove, was charged with criminal damage to property by reckless means of fire, a Class 4 felony, the release said.

Bond was set for Horwich at $10,000 on Monday, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 8 in Waukegan.
