(WAUKEGAN) The victim of a carjacking in the parking lot of a north suburban shopping center was forced at gunpoint to drive to a nearby ATM and withdraw $500.
About 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Waukegan Police responded to an armed robbery in the area of the Fountain Square Shopping Center (formerly Lakehurst).
The victim said a man entered his parked vehicle armed with a handgun, demanded his wallet and ordered him to drive to an ATM. The victim drove to a nearby bank and withdrew $500, a release from police said.
The offender then ordered the victim to drive to the area of 14th and Dugdale Road in North Chicago, where he got out and ran off. The victim was not injured, police said.
The offender was described as a black man in his early 20s with a medium build, wearing a blue
sweatshirt, dark pants and green baseball cap.
Waukegan Police Chief Daniel Greathouse called it “a crime of opportunity and an isolated incident,” but warned residents to be aware of their surroundings “to thwart such crimes from reoccurring.”
