Young men stealing cell phones at downtown restaurants, police say

Police are searching for cell-phone theives who have targeted downtown restaurants.
Two to four young black men between the ages of 16 to 21 approached people seated at restaurant tables downtown, showed them a flyer and asked for a donation, according to a community alert issued by Area Central detectives.
As the young men distracted the victim, one of them placed a paper over the person’s cell phone, which was lying on the table, the alert said, adding that the men then fled the restaurant.
The most recent theft took place June 8 about 1:25 p.m. in the 600 block of North State Street, the alert said. The young men are also believed to be behind two thefts that took place June 6 between 2:45 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. in the 0 to 100 block of West Adams Street and the 100 block of West Adams Street.
