One dead, another wounded in shooting outside SW Side gas station

One man was killed and another was wounded in a shooting outside a Southwest Side gas station late Wednesday night.

Two men, 20 and 22, were standing outside a Marathon gas station at 79th Street and Western Avenue about 11:40 p.m. when another man approached on foot and started shooting at them, police said.

The 22-year-old was shot in the back and died at the scene, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

He was identified as David Cocroft of the 12500 block of South Union Avenue, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The 20-year-old was shot multiple times and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in “stable” condition, Gaines said.

No one is in custody. Area Central detectives are investigating.
