15-year-olds charged in Elgin slaying

Updated: June 12, 2012 5:53AM

Two Elgin 15-year-olds have been arrested in connection with the Thursday murder of 16-year-old Nestor A. Alvarado in Elgin.

The two suspects were taken into custody Monday evening by Elgin’s Gang Crimes Unit. The Cook County state’s attorney’s office has authorized charges of first-degree murder against each individual.

Police said they were called to East Chicago Street at approximately 7:40 p.m. According to Police Lt. Dan O’Shea, a witness there provided a description of a car believed to have been involved in a shooting.

Officers located that car a few minutes later near Dundee Avenue and Symphony Way, just a few blocks from police headquarters downtown.

Several people were inside the car, including Alvarado, who had been shot once in the chest. Paramedics took him to Provena St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

On Monday night, Elgin Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said the murder was “senseless violence that ended the life of a 16-year-old and will dramatically change the life of the two responsible for it.”

“The Elgin Gang Unit and the Major Investigations Division have worked tirelessly since the shooting in attempt to identify the suspects and bring them into custody,” Swoboda said. “Their efforts paid off today with these arrests.”

Both individuals are set to appear in bond court Tuesday morning in Rolling Meadows.
