LOWELL, Ind.—A racehorse was shot dead in northwest Indiana on Tuesday, just a day before it was scheduled to race at Balmoral Park.
Lake County Sheriff’s police found Lady May Z shot between the eyes about 7 p.m. Tuesday in a pasture near the corner of 245th Avenue and Colfax Street in Lowell, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.
The 8-year-old standard bred trotting horse was scheduled to race Wednesday at Balmoral Park in south suburban Crete.
Police believe the shooting happened between 4 and 6 p.m. Tuesday. Police are looking for a white, newer-model two-door pickup seen in the area around that time.
Lake County Sheriff’s Det. Michelle Dvorscak said the owners had other race horses on the property, which is located in a secluded rural area.
Lady May Z was taken to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., for a necropsy.
“We don’t have the projectile yet,” Dvorscak said. “Without that we really don’t know what we are looking for.”
