7-year-old girl hit in drive-by shooting in Marquette Park

Updated: May 27, 2012 1:42AM

A 7-year-old girl playing in front of her Southwest Side home suffered a gunshot wound from a stray bullet from a drive-by shooting Saturday afternoon, police said.

At 4:20 p.m. Saturday, a white four-door car pulled up to a group of boys near the intersection of West 69th Street and South Artesian in Marquette Park, police said. Someone in the car started shooting, and a bullet hit the girl, who was outside her home on South Artesian, police said. Paramedics took the girl to Holy Cross Hospital, where she was in good condition.

More than an hour later, two men were shot about two blocks south of that incident, in the 2500 block of West 71st Street. In that shooting, a 22-year-old man was struck in the buttocks, arm and leg and was in serious condition at Holy Cross, police said. A 25-year-old man was shot in the hand and was in good condition at Holy Cross.

Police said the later shooting was gang-related and they were investigating whether it was connected to the earlier drive-by.

“There are several gang factions in that area, and we’re having problems with all of them,” a police officer said.

As of Saturday night, no one was in custody in connection with either incident.
