Two men were killed and two others were wounded in a shooting near a Calumet City nightclub early Saturday.
One of the dead was shot by police, who returned fire with a suspect from the shooting officers responded at a parking lot next to an establishment called, What’s Up, authorities said.
Officers responding to the scene, at 735 Torrence Ave, found two gunshot victims when they arrived, Calumet City Police Capt. Dan Zorzi said.
“While our officers were on the scene there were more shots,” Zorzi said. Officers exchanged gunfire with the man who was firing the gun, “and that person was shot,” Zorzi said.
No officers were injured in the incident.
A total of four people were wounded, two of them -- including the one shot by police -- fatally, Zorzi said.
The two who were killed were men in their 20s, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. Both suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to initial reports.
The other victims, a man and a woman, were hospitalized Saturday morning, Zorzi said.
The South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force was assisting Calumet City police in the investigation and the Illinois Public Integrity Task Force was also investigating because of the police-involved shooting.
