A man charged with slamming his car into a Chicago Fire Department engine — critically injuring five adults and children and hurting firefighters — was ordered held on $100,000 bail Thursday after he was slapped with a felony aggravated DUI charge.
Christopher Caston, 18, of Dolton, collided with the engine at 6:15 p.m. at South Halsted and West 128th Place, police said. Three children and two adults were hospitalized in critical condition, fire department officials said.
Additionally, four Fire Department members were taken to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island in good to fair condition, officials said. At least some of the victims were initially trapped inside the vehicle.
Caston was initially charged with a misdemeanor count of DUI and cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, driving with no proof of insurance and failure to stop at a stop sign, police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak said.
On Thursday, the DUI charge was upgraded to felony aggravated DUI.
