An elderly man who lived alone and apparently had been in poor health was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound outside his home just after the two-story building was set afire Tuesday morning in Beverly, authorities said.

The fire started shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday in the brick home at 10257 S. California Ave., Chicago Fire Departments spokesman Richard Rosado said.

When firefighters arrived, they heard popping noises — possibly from ammunition in the home, authorities said.

The fire was extinguished by about 6:30 p.m., but as firefighters searched the side of the building, they found the man dead in a car from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately released. No one else was hurt.
