Mayor Rahm Emanuel apologized Tuesday for any “disruption” caused by the NATO and G8 summits coming to Chicago this spring — even as he argued that those preemptively rescheduling graduations, weddings and proms might be jumping the gun.
“I apologize upfront for any disruption,” Emanuel said.
But he added, “We are a big city, a big metropolitan area. People will be able to be accommodated with their events.
“Whether it’s proms or weddings, we will be able to figure out a way . . . to accommodate” those events.
“It’s a one-time opportunity for the city,” Emanuel said. “Everybody understands the big upside for our city’s economic activity, job creation. There’s gonna be world leaders, foreign ministers, finance ministers, press from around the world to see what we all know to be the greatness of the city of Chicago.”
Shortly after taking office, Emanuel, a former congressman and White House chief of staff, used his formidable Washington clout to lure the NATO and G8 summits to McCormick Place May 15-22.
