The Cermak Road Bridge Historic District on the South Side near Chinatown has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, which calls it an example of the “industrial and architectural heritage of the Chicago River corridor.” Located along Cermak Road and the South Branch of the Chicago River, the district is a cluster of industrial buildings located around the city’s last double-leaf Scherzer rolling-lift bridge, according to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, which administers the National Register program in Illinois. It calls the Cermak Road Bridge District “unique, as the city’s only grouping of warehouse and manufacturing buildings from the early 20th century closely arranged around a bridge from the same period.”
