Two people were killed and five others were wounded after a shooting Tuesday night in a Church’s Chicken on the South Side, officials said.

The shooting happened after a dispute between two men outside the eatery around 6:50 p.m. in the 6600 block of South Halsted, officials said. One man, armed with handgun, chased the other male into Church’s before shooting seven people.

The dead men were in their 20s. A 16-year-old boy and a 51-year-old man were shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital. A 17-year-old boy also was shot in the leg and a 58-year-old man suffered multiple gunshots wounds and were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

LaToia Brown said she heard the gunshots from her home about two blocks away. But she said she became concerned about the shooting after receiving a call that one of the victims used to date her 16-year-old daughter.

“I would treat him like he is my son,” said Brown, who added the teen called her momma. “He would always come around and check on me to see how I am doing.”

Brown’s daughter, Diamond, said the teen was a “peacemaker.”

“Whenever he saw an altercation, he was the kind of person to avoid drama,” said a tearful Diamond Brown.

Northbound and southbound No. 8 Halsted buses were rerouted near 66th and Halsted streets, according to a CTA alert.
