Man killed after falling on salt-spreading tool

Updated: December 13, 2011 2:48AM

A northwest suburban man working for his family’s landscaping company died Monday after he fell on a salt-spreading tool in unincorporated Hanover Township, officials said.

Tim Pittas, 26, was unloading pavement salt from a truck when he fell onto an ice auger about 10:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of Sutton Road, officials said.

A spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff’s office said the incident appears to be “a complete accident.”

Pittas, of Lake of the Hills, was working with his father at their business called Quality Scapes when the accident happened, a law enforcement source said.

The South Elgin-based landscaping company has been in the Chicago area for 15 years and provides snow removal services in the winter.
