Former NFL and Northwestern University linebacker Napoleon Harris plans to run for the Illinois Senate, hoping to replace the Rev. James Meeks, who is not seeking re-election.

Harris filed nominating petitions in Springfield on Monday to run in the Democratic primary for the 15th District Senate seat, said his assistant, James Jones.

Harris, 32, played for Oakland, Minnesota and Kansas City during his seven years in the NFL.

Harris played college football for Northwestern after prepping at Thornton High School in south suburban Harvey.
