If you’re eating breakfast at Katherine Kalnes’ La Grange home and you spot Ryan Gosling’s blue eyes staring up at you from your plate, don’t freak out.
Say “bon appetit,” and chow down.
The Canadian movie star is the latest celebrity to be rendered in pancake form by the 25-year-old artist.
Kalnes’ uncanny talent for depicting the famous in pancake batter has made her the flavor of the month online, where her edible recreations of Kelly Ripa, Steven Colbert, Ellen Degeneres and Justin Bieber have gained a cult following on celebrity fansites.
“Perez Hilton has asked me to make a pancake of his face,” a slightly bewildered sounding Kalnes said of the Hollywood gossip blogger. “I haven’t decided if I’m going to do it or not.”
Kalnes studied painting at the University of Illinois, where she also got her start in food art by making an edible coloring book.
An archive of her previous pancakes — made with an aerosol “batter blaster,” a kitchen knife and icing — is stored in her parents’ freezer.
Gosling is her masterpiece, she says.
But the best thing about pancake art is “I get to eat while I’m working.”
