Man dies after taking off clothes and walking onto Interstate

Updated: November 7, 2011 2:38AM

A 35-year-old Robbins man was killed after he took off his clothes and walked out into traffic after crashing in the northbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway Sunday evening in suburban Worth.

Daniel Thompson was struck by a white rental 2010 Chrysler Town & Country minivan in the far left lane and was dead at the scene, State Police said.

Witnesses told police the man had been driving a black 2005 GMC pickup truck fast on the northbound lanes of the Tri-State Tollway when he rear-ended another car and the hit the right guard rail just south of 95th Street at 5:54 p.m., according to Illinois State Police Tollway. The truck came to a complete stop, then the man took off all his clothes and walked out into traffic before he was hit, officials said.

Three people in a black Chevrolet Cobalt were hospitalized after that vehicle swerved to avoid the fatal crash and struck the right guard rail, officials said. None of their injuries were life-threatening, officials said.

State Police could not say early Monday what made the man walk into traffic.
