Mayor Rahm Emanuel welcomes students to first day of school

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday morning visited the three Chicago Public Schools where teachers last week voted in favor of a controversial proposal to add 90 minutes to the school day this year.
Emanuel joined Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard at 8:30 a.m. to welcome students to the first day of school at STEM Magnet Academy, 1522 W. Fillmore St.
Following that visit, the mayor stopped by Genevieve Melody Elementary and Skinner North Elementary schools to welcome students there to the first day of this school year, according to a release from the mayor’s office. While he was at the schools he congratulated the schools’ principals and teachers for voting last week to lengthen their school day by 90 minutes.
