Mayor Daley says the United States has become a nation of “whiners.”
Daley made the assertion in comments Thursday at Wheaton College’s J. Dennis Hastert Center for Economics, Government and Public Policy.
Responding to a question about restoring the nation, Daley noted in the 1970s, Americans feared a Japanese takeover of the economy and later complained about the loss of manufacturing jobs to Mexico.
He said now “we’re whining about the Chinese and the Indians.” He said if Americans sacrificed a little for the common good, the U.S. can compete with any nation.
Daley, who will be replaced as mayor in May by Rahm Emanuel, also said taxpayers can no longer finance the current level of government.
