Scoopsville . . .
Dateline — The Money Line: The county may be in dire financial straits, but Sneed hears union employees of the Cook County Health and Hospital System are being awarded $250 bonuses for showing up to work during last week’s blizzard. (Sneed is in receipt of the disaster bonus forms needed to be filled out in order to collect the dough.)
†$$$$: Addendum: Sneed also hears all non-union employees and management are being offered comp time if they showed up for work.
Obamarama . . .
Dateline — The Chow/Wow Line: While news was flashing Thursday Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was poised to step down (he didn’t), President Obama was eating a “loaded” BLT sandwich at Sneed’s favorite ice cream parlour in Marquette, Mich.
† To wit: The president was in this jewel of an Upper Peninsula town checking out the high tech Wi-Fi initiative in action at Northern Michigan University. (Obama wants to expand access to high speed wireless to 98% of the population in five years.)
† To eat: But the president shocked the townsfolk when he made a pit stop at Doncker’s, the town’s legendary candy store/malt shop established in 1896, to have a little lunch and buy a Valentine’s Day chocolate heart for the first lady. “He also bought his kids chocolate and gummies,” said Tom Vear, the owner of Doncker’s, whom President Obama called his “homie” when he learned Vear was from Chicago.
† To move: “My wife, Jen Ray, and I moved here ten years ago,” said Vear, a former Chicago trader who decided to move to Marquette because “the town’s free Wi-Fi initiative enables us to do any kind of business here.”
† To glare: So while a crowd gathered outside Doncker’s and a woman in metallic hair rollers from a nearby beauty parlor pressed her nose up against the store window, President Obama chose not to eat the juicy “Obamaburger” hastily named for him — and opted for the “DJB” special, a sandwich named after a family friend/former employee killed in a recent motorcycle accident. “That meant a lot to us,” said Jen Ray Vear.
† To reflect: Then Obama left Doncker’s (where Sneed used to have ice cream after high school), headed to Northern Michigan University (where Sneed went to college for three years), and departed from Sawyer International Airport, (whose original construction Sneed’s father oversaw when it was an Air Force Base). But did Obama see the sign over the town’s new hot Blackrocks nano brewery which read: “Open Thursday if the sitting President is thirsty.” Just asking.
Rahm ’em . . .
Mayoral hopeful Rahm Emanuel is being feted by what is being billed as “a very special” reception fund-raiser by the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) Committee for Rahm tonight at the Ivy Room of the Tree Studios, 12 East Ohio St. Dem heavyhitters like Fred Eychaner, Mark Cozzi and Ray Koenig III are among co-chairs of the bash.
Coo corner . . .
Love in the time of rheumatism: It should be noted Spain’s legendary /fabulously wealthy Duchess of Alba, 85, is not letting frail health stand in the way of getting married for the third time — to someone nearly 25 years younger. (Her suitor is an antiques dealer. Be still my tongue.)
Sneedlings . . .
Today’s birthdays: Jennifer Aniston, 42; Burt Reynolds, 75; Sergio Mendes, 70 and Brandy Norwood, 32.
