IRS might alter whistleblower reward plan
The IRS is proposing new rules to jump-start a five-year-old program to entice people to turn in businesses or indivduals trying to cheat the government out of $2 million or more in taxes.
The program has drawn tips but has yet to pay any rewards.
The IRS said last summer whistleblowers could get rewards only if tips resulted in someone paying more taxes. The new rules would qualify whisteleblowers for rewards if tips stop anyone from claiming illegitimate tax refunds or if a company gets fewer tax credits. AP
