A man was shot and killed by Chicago Police Tuesday night in the Far South Side Riverdale neighborhood.

Calumet District officers responding to a tip about an armed bicyclist in the area saw a male riding a bicycle in the 13300 block of South Forestville about 9:35 p.m., according to a statement from police News Affairs.

The officers approached him to conduct a field interview, at which point he reached into his waistband and pulled out a semiautomatic handgun, police said.

Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said the officers were in an unmarked tactical car on a gang mission in the area when they saw the 21-year-old man riding a bicycle. The man produced the gun after officers shone the car’s spotlight on the man to get his attention and stop him for questioning, according to Camden.

He tried to run away and turned to point the gun at the officers, at which point the officers fired and struck him, according to police.

Camden said the officers fired in self-defense after the man pointed his gun at them during the foot chase.

Officers recovered a semiautomatic weapon at the scene, authorities said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the death but could not provide further details early Wednesday.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
