Police officer shoots, kills dog while chasing robbery suspect on South Side

A Chicago Police officer shot and killed a dog while chasing a robbery suspect Monday morning on the South Side.

A 55-year-old man was robbed by an armed male in the Washington Park neighborhood about 7:30 a.m., police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.

The victim flagged down police officers and described the robber, Estrada said. The officers searched the area and saw a man matching that description.

That man ran into a backyard in the 5900 block of South King Drive, and the officers followed. A large dog charged at the officers, police said, and one of the officers shot him, killing the dog.

No one was in custody for the robbery Tuesday morning, police said.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
