Some stores in the South Loop were temporarily evacuated after a natural gas main was damaged Monday morning.
A contractor for a cellphone company struck the gas line shortly after 11 a.m. near Roosevelt Road and State Street, according to Fire Media Affairs.
A hazardous materials response was put into place, and some stores and businesses in the area were evacuated, fire officials said. No injuries were reported, police said.
As of 11:40 a.m., crews had turned off the valve and stopped any escaping gas, Peoples Gas spokeswoman Jennifer Block said.
The hazardous material situation was secured about 12:20 p.m., Fire Media said.
No gas customers were affected as crews worked to repair the damaged main, Block said.
State Street and Wabash Avenue were closed to traffic between Roosevelt and 9th Street, police said. Traffic was also diverted off Roosevelt between State and Wabash.
The CTA’s No. 12, 18 and 146 buses were being detoured, according to the transit agency. Rail lines were not affected.
