A North Side man has been charged in a crash that killed a 71-year-old man and injured at least four people Wednesday morning in the Edgewater neighborhood on the North Side.

Vladimir Tsemekhman, 58, faces one count of reckless homicide, a Class 3 felony, according to a statement from Chicago Police. He also was cited for several moving violations, including reckless driving and not practicing due care while a pedestrian was in the roadway.

The crash, involving multiple vehicles and a CTA bus, happened at Sheridan and Balmoral at 11:12 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

Tsemekhman was speeding northbound on Sheridan Road and failed to stop his vehicle at a traffic light, police said.

He tried to drive to the right of the No. 147 bus, which was stopped in traffic, and struck two people who were loading groceries into their trunk, according to police and CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski. That crash caused a chain-reaction involving four other vehicles.

Frank Kiley, 71, of the 3900 block of North Clark Street, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:51 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Three people — a 69-year-old woman, a 55-year-old woman and a 64-year-old man — were taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released, police said. A 48-year-old man was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, where he was treated and released.

Tsemekhman, of the 800 block of West Belle Plaine Avenue, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized, police said. He was scheduled to appear in bond court Friday.
