Outbound lanes of the Kennedy Expressway reopened early Sunday morning after crews removed the last portion of the Ontario Street Bridge ahead of schedule.

All lanes and ramps of the interchange were expected to reopen later in the day Sunday, according to a news release from Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Jae Miller.

No major problems were reported during the second consecutive weekend of work on the massive Kennedy project.

The state transportation department said drivers could see delays Sunday and should allow extra time while traveling through the area.

Drivers are also urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Cabbie Sam King, 61, was one of many drivers who seemed to accept the weekend delays.

“They need to [do] the construction,” King said. “We don’t have a choice.”
