A man was found dead after fire and rescue crews pulled a car out of a 70-foot, water-filled quarry Monday night in Ottawa, about 50 miles west of Joliet.

About 7 p.m., a 2008 Chevy sedan blew through an intersection at Main Street and Boyce Memorial Drive, then drove through a fence and into a quarry filled with sand and water, LaSalle County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jay Stachowiak said.

The car was pulled out of the quarry with heavy rigging equipment and taken away on a truck late Monday.

The body of the man thought to have been driving the car was found later in the quarry, LaSalle County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin Swierkosz said Tuesday morning. His name was withheld pending notification of family members.

The LaSalle County Coroner’s office could not immediately be reached to confirm the fatality.
