A 40-foot-tall Logan Square tree whose trunk snapped in gusting wind Monday morning crushed two cars and narrowly missed a woman walking nearby.
The tree fell at 10 a.m. near Belden and Sacramento, heavily damaging two parked cars and taking down power lines with it.
“A lady, just not too long, walk past it before it fell,” said Jerome Logins, who lives on the block.
There was no wind warning in effect Monday morning, said National Weather Service Meteorologist David Beachler.
“Usually it takes 60 to 70 mile an hour winds to knock over tree of that size,” Beachler said. “But, sometimes, if the tree has diseased growth, or some decay inside, that can happen,” he said.
A police officer was keeping pedestrian and car traffic away from the downed tree Monday morning.
“Thank God no one was hurt,” he said.
