A 76-year-old woman was shot Wednesday evening in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.

The woman suffered a gunshot wound in her shoulder about 6:45 p.m. while she was driving near 40th Street and Artesian Avenue, said Stacey Cooper, a Chicago Police Department spokeswoman.

She drove to Garfield Boulevard and Western Avenue, where rescue crews picked her up. She was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.
