'Dibs' can be an abuse of winter parking tradition

The Chicago tradition of "dibs," marking shoveled-out parking spaces during the winter should be reserved for heavy snowfall.

We could have our first snow this week. So here's a little message about parking.
The Ride knows that there is a Chicago tradition of "dibs," marking shoveled-out parking spaces with chairs, broomsticks, birdcages and buckets.
But the Ride also feels incredibly discouraged when she sees people marking "dibs" when there's only an inch of snow.
Come on, people. Show some Christmas spirit. If it snows a few inches, did you really put that much effort into shoveling out a space that you get to claim it for yourself for the rest of the winter-
If it's just normal winter snowfall, the street is for everybody. Leave the space free. And while you're at it, shovel out a space for your elderly neighbor.
As my mother would say, it'll add a star to your crown.
