Mechanical issue forces US Airways flight back to O’Hare

A US Airways flight to Phoenix had to return to O’Hare Airport on Thursday afternoon because of a mechanical issue shortly after takeoff.

Flight 563 left O’Hare about 4:35 p.m., said Michelle Mohr, a spokeswoman for American Airlines, which includes US Airways.

The plane landed without incident and made it back to the gate on its own, Mohr said. None of the 187 passengers or 6 crew members was injured.

Some passengers heard a loud noise shortly after takeoff, a source said.

That typically indicates an issue with the plane’s compressor, which handles airflow going into the engine. There was no explosion, and it is standard procedure for pilots to turn around in that scenario, the source said.

Maintenance crews are checking the aircraft, and passengers are being rebooked on other flights, Mohr said.
