A 60-year-old man died Thursday evening in a fire at a apartment building in the Austin neighborhood, the Chicago Fire Department said.

The fire started just before 5:25 p.m. in a two-story, multi-unit apartment building in the 500 block of South Lavergne Avenue, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Joe Roccasalva said.

The man was found dead in a bedroom of the unit where the fire started, Roccasalva said. A walker and a cane were found in the room, and the man may have been disabled, he said.

The fire did not spread beyond that unit, Roccasalva said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the man’s death but was not releasing his identity Thursday night.

The American Red Cross said responders were on their way to the building to assist residents, but officials did not know how many people may have been displaced.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
