Store roof collapses in extra-alarm blaze on South Side

Updated: January 17, 2014 11:37AM

A firefighter was hurt while battling an extra-alarm fire that damaged adjoining cell phone and dollar stores on the South Side early Friday.

Flames and heavy smoke were already shooting through the roof of the Dollar & Up store near the intersection of East 75th Street and South Martin Luther Kind Drive when crews responded about 12:15 a.m., Chicago Fire District Chief Tim Sampey told reporters at the scene.

Firefighters took a defensive position as it was upgraded to a 2-11 fire, with the blaze spreading to the Cricket Wireless store next door, Sampey said.

The roof of the dollar store collapsed in the fire, officials said. The extent of damage to the cell phone store was unclear early Friday.

The fire was out by 1:35 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries to his hand and was taken in “stable” condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center, Sampey said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
