16-year-old killed at party; 6 others wounded in weekend violence

A 16-year-old boy was killed and at least six other people have been injured in shootings across Chicago since Saturday.

Marquise Harris, was fatally shot late Saturday by a friend of his girlfriend after the couple argued at a gathering in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.

Marquise was in a second-floor apartment in the 6200 block of South St. Lawrence about 11:20 p.m. when he started to argue with his girlfriend, police said.

A male friend of his girlfriend intervened and Marquise and the friend began fighting, police said. The friend left the gathering, returned a short time later and allegedly shot the teen in the chest.

Marquise was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Residents of the building where the shooting occurred, on a block with three boarded-up buildings, did not want to speak to a Chicago Sun-Times reporter Sunday afternoon. A neighbor said the building was taken over in the last few years by young men involved with drugs.

“It’s an active drug spot. Something needs to be done about it,” said the neighbor, who asked not to be named.

Six people were injured in separate shootings acroos the city this weekend.

The most recent nonfatal shooting was reported about 8:45 p.m. Sunday. A 20-year-old man was shot in the abdomen in the 7100 block of South Damen Avenue, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.

About 4:30 a.m. Sunday, a 23-year-old man told police he was shot in the back in the 3000 block of South Keeler Avenue. He made his own way to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

About 9:15 p.m. Saturday, an 18-year-old man and a 27-year-old man were shot at a house in the 6600 block of South Lowe in the Englewood neighborhood. They heard a knock on the door, stepped onto the front porch and were shot by three people, police said.

The 18-year-old was shot in the ankle and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center. The 27-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound in his ankle, police said. Both were in good condition.

About 7:25 p.m. Saturday, a 36-year-old man was shot as he was walking in the 3500 block of West Huron Street. Just before the shooting, a group of people approached him. At one point, he got into a physical struggle with one of the suspects, who drew a handgun that went off, and the man was shot in the leg, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.

About 3 a.m. Saturday, a 23-year-old man was sitting in a vehicle in the 1300 block of West Division Street when someone approached and shot him, police said. The man drove himself to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where police said he was listed in good condition.

No one was in custody for any of the shootings. Area detectives were investigating.
