3 dead, 17 injured in weekend shootings

Three men are dead and at least 17 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday afternoon.

Louis Berry, 24, was found shot to death on a sidewalk in the 4300 block of West Cullerton about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, police said. Berry, of the 3200 block of West Potomac, was shot in the back.

Earlier in the weekend, a 26-year-old man was shot and killed early Saturday in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Deangelo Shelton was standing in the vestibule of an apartment with a 25-year-old man in the 300 block of North Central about 1:25 a.m. when an unknown suspect entered with several other people and opened fire on the two men before running away, according to police and the medical examiner’s office.

Shelton, of the 3800 block of West Arthington, was shot several times in the abdomen and taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m., the medical examiner’s office said.

The 25-year-old was shot once in the abdomen and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in guarded condition, police said.

Less than an hour earlier, a 42-year-old man was shot and killed in the Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.

About 1:10 a.m. Saturday, officers responding to a call of shots fired found Michael Turner lying in the alley in the 700 block of East 67th, authorities said.

Turner, of the 9400 block of South Eberhart, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he was pronounced dead at 2:10 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

The most recent non-fatal shooting occurred about 6:15 p.m. Sunday. A 34-year-old was sitting in a vehicle in the 300 block of North Hamlin when a Pontiac Bonneville pull up next to him and someone in the car opened fire. The man was shot in the right leg and left side, police said. He took himself to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was listed in stable condition, police said.

About 7 a.m. Sunday, a 54-year-old man was in the 5600 block of South Western when an unknown man approached and shot him in the groin, police said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, police said.

Less than an hour earlier, two people were shot in the South Side New City neighborhood.

A 23-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man were driving eastbound near the 4700 block of South Throop just after 6 a.m. when a person in another car drove up and fired shots, hitting the woman in her hand and the man in his back, police said.

The woman was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center in good condition, while the man is listed in serious condition at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, police said.

Earlier, a 36-year-old man was in a vehicle about 4:30 a.m. in the 500 block of North Pine when an unknown offender drove up in a dark brown, four-door car and fired shots, police said.

He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he is in good condition with a gunshot wound to his left hip.

Other shootings throughout the weekend include:

◆ ◆ A 41-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to both legs in an Auburn Gresham neighborhood shooting early Sunday. The man heard shots and felt pain about 3:45 a.m. while he was standing in an alley in the 1500 block of West 79th, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and listed in stable condition.

◆ ◆ Less than an hour earlier in the Roseland neighborhood, a 34-year-old man was shot in the elbow in the 500 block of West 104th around 2:55 a.m., police said. He was taken to MetroSouth Hospital in Blue Island, where he was in good condition.

◆ ◆ Shortly after midnight in the Douglas neighborhood, a 23-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his lower right leg in a drive-by shooting. He was walking on a sidewalk in the 3600 block of South Rhodes about 12:25 a.m. when someone in a dark-colored sedan drove past and fired shots, police said. The man was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in stable condition.

◆ ◆ An 18-year-old man was shot Saturday evening in the Kenwood neighborhood. He was shot in the abdomen shortly after 6 p.m. in the 1000 block of East 46th, police said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

◆ ◆ A few hours earlier, a 29-year-old man was shot in the buttocks in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. He was standing in the 700 block of South Homan about 2:35 p.m. when a van pulled up and someone inside fired shots at him, police said. The man transported himself to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

◆ ◆ About 4:05 a.m. Saturday in the Logan Square neighborhood, a 27-year-old man was walking in the 1800 block of North St. Louis when he got into a gang-related argument with three unknown men and one of them shot him in the lower left leg, police said. A relative took the man to Presence Saint Mary Medical Center, where his condition stabilized.

◆ ◆ In the Englewood neighborhood about 3:25 a.m., a 27-year-old man was standing on a porch in the 1100 block of West 68th when an unknown male walked up and opened fire, shooting him in the leg and groin, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in stable condition.

◆ ◆ Less than 30 minutes earlier in the Chatham neighborhood, a 37-year-old man was shot in the hip in the 8100 block of South Ingleside, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in stable condition.

◆ ◆ Just before midnight, a 29-year-old man was shot in the lower right part of his chest in the Englewood neighborhood. He was shot while walking on the sidewalk in the 6800 block of South Laflin when he heard gunshots come from a group of males standing further down the block, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in “stable” condition.

◆ ◆ About 11:30 p.m. Friday, an 18-year-old man suffered a graze wound to his in the 1800 block of North Mozart, police said. He was taken to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center in stable condition.

◆ The first shooting of the weekend occurred at 4:35 p.m. Friday in the 3400 block of West 79th. A 16-year-old boy was shot in the leg and taken to Christ Medical Center in stable condition.

No one is in custody for any of the shootings as area detectives investigate.
