Fight leads to 5 shot at Riverdale bar

May 14, 2008

RIVERDALE -- Five apparent customers thrown out of a southwest suburban Riverdale bar are in serious to critical condition after being shot late Tuesday during a fight at the establishment.

Police responded to shots fired report at Jimmy’s Place Cocktail Lounge, 13832 S. Indiana Ave., at 11:59 p.m. Upon arrival, officers saw "hundreds of customers" running from the bar, according to a Riverdale police release.

Emergency personnel discovered three gunshot victims -- one in the doorway and two outside the bar, police said. However, Riverdale Fire Department Lt. Chris Van Dyke said one man was found lying in the doorway, one man was found leaning against a car with a gunshot wound to the thigh and one man was found sitting inside the bar.

A man shot multiple times and a man who suffered a single gunshot wound were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. A man shot twice was taken to Saint James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields, the release said.

All three men were in serious to critical condition, according to Van Dyke, who said the man found in the doorway suffered the most serious injuries.

Holy Cross and Roseland Hospital each informed police of an additional gunshot victim from the bar, the release said.

Police were told a fight started in the bar and everyone involved was asked to leave. The fight continued outside and appears to have led to the shooting, the release said.

A man who answered the phone at the bar said, "some customers got into a fight outside." He refused to be identified. A woman who answered the phone refused to comment.

At 5 a.m., police said four of the five victims were in serious but stable condition. The fifth person was in surgery in an unknown condition.

Detectives are interviewing witnesses and gathering information about the offenders Wednesday morning, the release said.

The Calumet Park Fire Department assisted, said firefighter Songo Bailey.
