Five shot in three separate South Side shootings

May 5, 2008

Five men are in the hospital Monday morning with gunshot wounds following three separate shootings on the South Side.

At 9:30 p.m., two men were walking in the 000 block of West 119th Street when a man began shooting at them, police News Affairs Officer John Henry said.

A 21-year-old man is in "stable" condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to his right leg. A 22-year-old man is in good condition at Roseland Community Hospital suffering a gunshot wound to his left arm, Henry said.

No one was in custody for the shooting as of 12:30 a.m., according to a Calumet District lieutenant.

Less than a half-hour later at 9:58 p.m., two men were shot in the 5500 block of South Shields Avenue, Henry said.

Two men were sitting in a car when another vehicle pulled up next to them and began firing shots, an Englewood District lieutenant said.

A 25-year-old man was shot in the head and taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County. A 17-year-old man is in "stable" condition at University of Chicago Hospital with a gunshot wound to his left arm, Henry said.

The shooting was probably gang-related, according to the lieutenant, who said someone might be in custody as of 12:30 a.m.

Just before 12:45 a.m. Monday, another man suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen in the 9400 block of South Burnside Avenue when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire on him. The man, whose age is unknown, is in "stable" condition at Roseland Community Hospital, Henry said.
