Shots while trick-or-treating in Uptown

Families trick-or-treating in the Uptown neighborhood scurried for cover and children were left crying after three teenagers -- including a 13-year-old boy -- were critically injured in a gang shooting on the street early Sunday evening.
The victims -- aged 13, 17 and 17 -- all survived being shot in their legs at 5:15 p.m. on the 4400 block of North Magnolia, friends said.
But a 35-year-old man, Marlos Canteberry, was shot dead an hour later in a second shooting just a few blocks away on the 1000 block of West Sunnyside, authorities said.
A father who was trick-or-treating on nearby Kenmore Avenue with his wife and two children at the time of the first shooting said his and his neighbors' kids were ''crying and scared'' after witnessing the attack.
They were almost run over by a sedan with three young men in it, he said, before they ''heard at least five to six shots from across the street just west of Magnolia and [a young man] went running down the street with a gun in his hand towards the car that almost hit us.''
Another witness heard about 10 gunshots. Then he saw a man, who appeared to be in his 20s wearing dark jeans and a dark jacket, get into a beige late '80s- or early '90s-model car which then sped off east on Montrose.
The second witness said there were many young children in the area at the time and ''families with young kids out having fun.''
The 17-year-olds were released from the hospital Monday, but the 13-year-old remained at Children's Memorial Hospital, relatives said.
May Finderson, 68, who lives next to the scene of the shooting, said, ''There's gangs shooting in the alley here every night, and people are scared to leave their homes -- we need to get some help out here.''
