Miguel Gonzalez is charged with numerous offenses, including two counts each of attempted murder and aggravated assault of a peace officer.
A man with no criminal history was denied bond Friday after leading
police on a chase Wednesday night on the Northwest Side that
left three cops injured and forced officers to fire shots at him twice.
Miguel
Gonzalez, 24, of the 1000 block of West Balmoral Avenue is charged with
two counts each of attempted murder, aggravated assault of a peace
officer and DUI, and one count each of aggravated fleeing police and
aggravated fleeing police involving bodily injury, police said.
On
Friday, Gonzalez was denied bond and a preliminary hearing was set for
Nov. 3, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra
Simonton said.
The chase began about 8:45 p.m. as Gonzales drove
with a female passenger at Sunnyside and Broadway, court records show.
He was seen running a red light by an officer on bike patrol, who
attempted to curb the vehicle, which instead sped off.
Other
officers caught up to Gonzalez on Lake Shore Drive and again attempted
to curb the car, but he refused to stop and struck an officer at Lake
Shore Drive and Belmont, court records said.
Gonzalez then drove
west on Addison and when officers saw him at Berenice and Melvina, they
attempted to block his vehicle in.
When the car stopped,
officers approached on foot, but the car accelerated, striking one
officer and prompting police to fire shots. That officer suffered a
sprained back and injury to the hip, court records said.
Police
were finally able to stop Gonzalez by driving alongside his vehicle,
causing him to strike a light pole on Marmora. As officers exited their
vehicles to take him into custody, Gonzales again hit the gas, striking
another officer and injuring his leg, court records said.
This
prompted the officers to fire shots again. Gonzalez allegedly then fled
on foot, before being apprehended in the 3900 block of North Marmora, court records
indicated.
Three officers and Gonzalez were taken to an area
hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the police statement said.
No one was hit by gunfire.
Gonzales
was also ticketed for carrying alcohol and driving the wrong way on a
one-way street.
