Court rejects Peterson bid to get out of jail

Drew Peterson will have to stay in jail while pre-trial appeals in his murder case are sorted out.

A state appellate court denied Peterson's effort to be released and alerted his attorneys Monday.

Peterson will appeal to the state Supreme Court, said Joseph Lopez, one of the lawyers defending Peterson against charges he murdered his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in 2004.

Peterson is also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson.

Peterson has been jailed since his 2009 arrest. His bond was set at $20 million.

He was set to go to trial July 8, but that was delayed by pre-trial appeals. Prosecutors have said the appeals could drag on for more than six months.

"You can't deny a constitutional right like this," Lopez said. "They're denying him a right to a speedy trial."

A spokesman for the Will County state's attorney's office, said Peterson's "constitutional rights have been scrupulously protected at every step of this process."
