Woman charged for driving into house with toddler in car
A female motorist who was upset after a family fight drove into a South Deering neighborhood residence with a toddler in the vehicle on the South Side Wednesday afternoon and has been charged with child endangerment and assault, police said.
Twenty-year-old Tamika Adams, of the 6000 block of South Rhodes Avenue, was upset from a “family fight” on the 9600 block of South Crandon Avenue at 4:50 p.m. when she allegedly ran a Chevrolet sedan into the townhome with her 2-year-old daughter in the car, police said.
During the fight, an unidentified man at the Crandon address -- who police said was under "house arrest" -- had broken the windows of the car Adams was driving, prompting her to back into a pole and drive off. She returned a short time later and allegedly rammed the car into the Crandon townhome, police said.
Adams said she accidentally lost control of the car.
Adams was taken into custody and has been charged with child endangerment, aggravated assault, negligent driving, all of which are misdemeanors, police said.
She was also ticketed for several traffic violations including driving without a car seat or insurance, police said.
The man, who had fled the scene, was later taken into custody and charged with domestic battery, according to police who declined to release the man's name.
Adams was not injured, but the child was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital for overnight observation, according to police who said alcohol and drugs were not thought to be a factor in the wreck.
