Little Village man slain near Malcolm X College

November 2, 2009

A man inside a vehicle was fatally shot early Sunday on the Near West Side.

At 2 a.m., police responded to a drive-by shooting on the 1800 block of West Ogden Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

Efrain Acevedo was in a car when multiple shots were fired from a silver vehicle and he was hit, according to Greer.

Acevedo, 21, of the 2500 block of South Hamlin Avenue, was pronounced dead at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County at 5:45 a.m. Sunday, according to a spokesman for the medical examiner's office.

Acevedo suffered gunshot wounds to his lower back and was initially taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, Greer said.

It was not immediately known if Acevedo was driving or if others were in the car at the time, according to Greer who said the incident is possibly gang-related and no one was in custody as of 3 a.m.

The Ogden Avenue address is nearby Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Van Buren St.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Monday.

Harrison Area detectives are investigating.
