2 accused of stealing from mourners' cars at cemetery
While mourners gathered at a grave site to say goodbye to a loved one, Stacy Egan and Thomas Beach allegedly looted their unlocked cars.
Egan and Beach are accused of stealing whatever they could find in unlocked cars at south suburban cemeteries during funeral services, Cook County sheriff's police said Tuesday.
"These two had no regard for people who are grieving," said Steve Patterson, spokesman for Sheriff Tom Dart.
Last summer, police received reports of more than a dozen thefts at cemeteries and funeral homes, including many from Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Worth. After Egan and Beach were nabbed Friday, Egan allegedly told investigators they targeted unlocked cars at that cemetery while families were visiting grave sites or attending funerals.
They are charged with grabbing GPS units, purses, wallets, iPods and even loose change, Patterson said.
Egan, 23, of Orland Park, is charged with four counts of felony burglary and with criminal trespass.
Beach, 22, of Chicago Ridge, is charged with one count of burglary and criminal trespass.
They were freed after posting 10 percent of their $75,000 bond.
