A drawing of a smiling Santa saying “Merry Christmas to all .. and to all a good night!” is the special postmark for the southwestern Indiana post office of Santa Claus this December.

A special Santa Claus postmark has been offered every year since 1983.

This year’s was drawn by Purdue University student Nolan Brinkman.

Postmaster Marian Balbach says the post office branch in Santa Claus, Ind. — a small town about 35 miles northeast of Evansville, Ind. — usually gets about 13,000 pieces of mail a month, but each December it receives about 400,000 pieces, the bulk of those sent to the postmaster with cards and letters to postmark and send on.

There is no charge for the postmark, but it has to be requested.
