Man trying to make peace during fight is shot to death: prosecutors

A Calumet City man was denied bail Sunday after prosecutors told a Cook County judge he killed a friend who was trying to make peace with him after an argument in the South Suburb.

Noah N. Wilburn, 18, of the 1300 block of Imperial Avenue, has been charged with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Brandon Wilborn Friday in the 800 block of 163rd.

Assistant State’s Attorney Oscar Garcia said Wilburn and a witness were standing in front of the witness’ home when Wilborn arrived with two additional witnesses. All of them are friends, he said.

But Wilburn and Wilborn — whose last names are spelled slightly differently — had previously gotten into an argument, Garcia said. The victim approached Wilburn and tried to make peace, Garcia said.

When the victim turned his head, Garcia said Wilburn punched him. That led to a fight, Garcia said. Once it was over, the victim again tried to make amends, but Wilburn wouldn’t have it. So Garcia said the victim got in a car and drove away.

That’s when Garcia said Wilburn retrieved a .38-caliber handgun he’d asked one of the witnesses to hold. The victim returned less than a minute later and got out of his car, unarmed and shirtless. Garcia said Wilburn walked up to him, pulled the gun and shot the victim in the groin and stomach.

Then, when the victim fell, Garcia said Wilburn shot him again in the back.

Wilburn fled into the woods, Garcia said. He ran to his house, where police later arrested him as he tried to flee through a window. The witnesses identified him as the shooter, Garcia said.

Wilborn was pronounced dead at Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital in Hammond, he said.

Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Wilburn held without bail when the teen appeared in bond court Sunday.
